Tablewear + Utensils 2016

My thesis, Instruments of Generation, is an exploration into how tools affect our output of designers.  Looking at the proliferation of Prosumer 3D printers, I began to look more specifically at this tool from an output perspective.  At the same time, I wanted to look at our vitual tools for design.  While looking at the work of my Industrial Design contemporaries I have found that many of the peices being 3D printed are not taking full advantage of the power of 3D printing. 

 

Conventional software was developed for our normal 2D modes of manufacture, and as such was influencing designers into 2D forms at output.

 

Drawing upon my experience with Rhinoceros as a Architecture Undergrad, I began to re-explore the Grasshopper algorithmic modeling tool as a powerful tool for complex form generation.

 

My workflow while using this program, specifically the quick realtime testing of multiple variables which affect all aspects of a products form and function,  led to another realization.

 

I was essentially customizing an overall "recipe" I had developed for a product through my workflow.  Could I then offer some of the ingredients list to consumers,  allowing them to customize their own products within an overall framework provided by a designer.

Once script controls the design of both the plate and bowl.  The curvature of the bowl is meant to fit into the curvature of the hand. Different textures can be applied based on teh wants of the user.

 

The silverware script allows the designer or consumer to change the shape of the handle to fit their needs and the size and shape of the utensil head for various foods.  Knifes and spoons can be adjusted to fit the function of the situation.
